The reach between the Three Gorges Dam and the Gezhouba Dam is one of the most difficult channels of the
Chuanjiang River. Its navigation capacity has become a bottleneck constraining the shipping development of the Changjiang
River. This paper firstly introduced the main rapid reaches,and then taking Xi shoal (a well-known flooding rapid between the
two dams) as an example, analyzed its characteristics and causes for obstruction, and pointed out that several measures such as
reef blasting, slot filling and damming are effective in slowing down the upper ship route,reducing the gradient and dispelling
the bubbles swirling water. This idea aiming at enlarging the navigable waters,prolonging the navigable period of
ten-thousand-tonnage fleet and meeting the navigation expectation of design vessels,could be a reference for the construction
of the major channel system of the Changjing River in future.
